Handmade shopping habits vary widely across countries. Some have strong interest in artisan products, while others spend more per purchase or have long-standing traditions of giving handmade gifts. To identify the strongest handmade gift markets for 2026, we combined three indicators: Etsy buying behavior, consumer sustainability preferences, and overall gift market size.

• The ranking combines three indicators rather than relying on a single dataset.
• Etsy marketplace activity is used as a proxy for handmade purchasing.
• Consumer sustainability preferences are included, since sustainability is a key reason people choose handmade products.
• Gift market size provides context on each country's spending potential.
• Where country-specific data wasn't available, it was left unestimated to keep the index transparent.

• United States & United Kingdom – The largest and most established handmade markets.
• France – Leads in sustainability, making it a key market for handmade products.
• Germany, Canada & Australia – Growing demand driven by sustainability-conscious buyers.
• Italy, Spain & Netherlands – Smaller but steadily expanding artisan markets.
• China, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, South Korea & India – Large gift markets with limited handmade-specific data.

The biggest surprise is France, which ranks among the strongest handmade markets thanks to exceptionally high sustainability awareness. While the U.S. and U.K. remain the largest markets overall, countries like Germany, Canada, and Australia also stand out by combining steady marketplace growth with strong consumer interest in sustainable products. Several major economies, including China and India, remain under-researched despite their large gift markets.

The rankings suggest two clear strategies:
• For maximum sales volume: prioritize the United States and United Kingdom.
• For sustainability-focused branding: target France, Germany, Australia, and the Netherlands, where consumer values align closely with handmade products.
